How to increase average order value on Shopify

You pay roughly the same to acquire a customer whether they buy one item or three. Raising average order value is the fastest way to make every ad dollar and every shipment work harder.

Why average order value matters

Average order value is total revenue divided by the number of orders. Because acquisition, payment and fulfilment costs are mostly charged per order, a bigger basket usually means more profit per customer, a higher break-even cost per acquisition, and room to scale ads that were marginal before.

The best AOV tactics do not feel like upselling. They make the larger option the obvious, better-value choice at the moment the customer is already deciding to buy.

The playbook

  1. Add quantity breaks to your best sellers

Offer one, two and three units with an increasing discount, and highlight the middle tier as most popular. Products people use up or gift, such as skincare, supplements, coffee and socks, respond best. Hot Bundles applies the discount automatically in the cart and at checkout, so there is no code to remember.

  2. Build bundles around how customers use your products

Mix-and-match bundles let shoppers build their own set from a collection. Buy-one-get-one works for clearing stock and for gifting. Complete-the-look add-ons turn a single item into an outfit, a kit or a routine.

  3. Show the offer where the decision happens

Place bundles directly on the product page, next to the add-to-cart button, styled to match your brand. Keep it to three options. More choices slow people down.

  4. Make the product page worth the bigger basket

Shoppers commit to more when they understand the product. Scroll-scrubbed video, 360° spins and unboxing sequences show texture, scale and detail that static photos miss. ScrollTrigger adds them as native theme blocks and loads them only when they are about to appear, so the page stays fast.

  5. Help shoppers find more products

Pagination makes people decide whether page two is worth a click. Infinite scroll or a Load More button keeps them browsing, lazy-loaded images keep the page fast, and Scroller Pro remembers their place when they come back from a product page.

  6. Measure average order value and margin together

Watch AOV, bundle attach rate and the revenue your offers add, but also conversion rate and discount depth. The goal is more profit per order, not just a bigger number at checkout.

(—) FAQ

Questions, answered.

Do bundle discounts hurt my margin?

Usually less than you would expect, because the discount only applies to units the customer would not otherwise have bought, and you save on shipping and acquisition per unit. Start with modest tiers, such as 10% and 20%, and check margin per order rather than per item.

Should I use quantity breaks or bundles?

Use quantity breaks for products people buy more than one of, and bundles for products that go together. Most stores benefit from both on different products.

Will scroll animations slow down my store?

Heavy, always-loaded media can. ScrollTrigger compresses files automatically, serves them from a global CDN and only loads animations when they are about to enter the screen.

How many bundle options should I show?

Three is the sweet spot: a single unit as the anchor, a highlighted middle option and a best-value option. More choices tend to lower conversion.
