How to recover abandoned carts with WhatsApp and email

Most shoppers who reach checkout and leave were genuinely interested. A well-timed reminder on the channel they actually read brings many of them back.

Why shoppers abandon checkout

The common reasons are unexpected shipping costs, comparing prices in another tab, wanting to check with someone first, payment problems, or simply getting distracted. None of these mean the customer has said no.

That is why recovery works: you are reminding an interested shopper, answering a doubt or removing a small obstacle, not convincing a stranger.

Why WhatsApp, and why email still matters

In many markets WhatsApp is where customers actually read their messages, while promotional email competes with a crowded inbox. A short WhatsApp reminder with a link straight back to the saved cart is hard to miss.

Email is still the best channel for regular campaigns to your whole list. The strongest setup uses WhatsApp for the time-sensitive nudge and email to keep everyone else buying.

The playbook

  1. Collect phone numbers and consent

Ask for a phone number at checkout and make the WhatsApp opt-in clear. Whapi adds a WhatsApp signup and chat button to your storefront so you can grow an opted-in list before customers even reach checkout.

  2. Send the first reminder within the hour

Timing matters more than wording. Whapi sends a timed WhatsApp reminder from your own business number with a link back to the saved cart, so the customer can finish in two taps.

  3. Follow up once, and use incentives sparingly

If the first reminder does not convert, a second one later can include an optional discount code. Do not offer a discount in every first message, or customers learn to abandon on purpose.

  4. Answer the question behind the abandonment

Often the shopper replies with a question about sizing, delivery time or payment. Convo Desk puts that reply in one inbox with the order beside it, so the right answer goes back before interest fades.

  5. Give returning shoppers a better reason to buy

When they come back, a quantity break or bundle on the product page can turn the recovered order into a bigger one.

  6. Keep the rest of your list buying

Recovery handles one cart at a time. Regular campaigns keep your whole list engaged. Omnopic plans, writes, designs and sends eight email campaigns a month for a flat fee; automated email flows such as abandoned-cart emails can be quoted separately.

(—) FAQ

Questions, answered.

Is it allowed to send abandoned cart messages on WhatsApp?

Yes, when the customer has opted in to receive WhatsApp messages from your business and you use approved message templates through Meta’s official WhatsApp Business API, which is what Whapi uses.

How many reminders should I send?

One or two. A first reminder within the hour and an optional second one later is enough. More than that risks opt-outs.

Should every reminder include a discount?

No. Lead with a simple reminder and the link back to the cart. Keep discounts for a later follow-up or for high-value carts.

How much do WhatsApp messages cost?

Meta charges per message, and with Whapi you pay those fees directly to Meta with no markup. Whapi plans start at $18.99 a month with a 7-day free trial.
